Explain the Traditional understands of the hierarchy of beings. (7 mks)

  1. The term hierarchy refers to the order in which God created and ranked created beings in the universe from the highest to the lowest.
  2. The traditional African understanding of the hierarchy of beings is based on the myths of creation.
  3. At the top of the hierarchy is God, the Supreme Being. He is believed to be responsible of the existence and sustenance of human beings.
  4. Second are diviners – these are spirits of a high rank but below God.
  5. Third in the hierarchy are common spirits. These are spirits created by God or descendants from human beings who dies many years ago.
  6. Fourth are the living dead (ancestor). This groups forms spirits of people who died but whose identity is still fresh in peoples memories.
  7. Fifth are human beings. They include those who are alive and those yet to be born
  8. Sixth are living things (Plants and animal). They are used by human beings in their natural and religious life as foods & sacrifices
  9. Seventh are non-living things. These are natural and artificial things without biological life. These include rain, rivers, mountains, rocks and other lifeless objects.
