Sub Strand: 1.1 Evolution and Development of Computers

Specific Learning Outcomes

By the end of the sub-strand, the learner should be able to:

a) explain the influence of early computing devices on the evolution of electronic computers,

b) describe the principal technologies that defined the development of computers,

c) relate the principal technologies to their respective generations,

d) appreciate technological advancement in the development of computers.

Suggested Learning Experiences

The learner is guided to:

  • Use print or digital resources to search for information on the ancient computing devices that led to the development of electronic computers (abacus, Napier’s bone, Pascaline, slide rule, difference engine, analytic engine, Jacquard loom).
  • search for information on the principal technologies that defined the development of computers (vacuum tubes, transistors, integrated circuits (IC), large-scale IC, very large-scale IC) and present findings,
  • discuss various generations of computers (first, second, third, fourth, and fifth generations),
  • match principles of computer technology to their respective generations,
  • Share ideas on technological advancements in computer development, such as the importance of roadside light-emitting diode (LED) panels for displaying dynamic information (traffic updates, weather alerts, and emergency alerts).

  1. What is the importance of the principles of computer technology?
  2. How have computers evolved over generations?
