STRAND 2.0: COMPUTER NETWORKING
Sub Strand: 2.1 Data Communication
Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of the sub strand, the learner should be able to:
a) explain the terminologies used in data communication,
b) describe the characteristics of data communication systems in computer networking,
c) connect computer devices to create a data communication system,
d) acknowledge the significance of data communication systems in networking.
Suggested Learning Experiences
The learner is guided to:
- use print or digital media to search for definitions of the terms used in data communication (data, signals, communication channel, network, transmission media, TCP/IP, Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, protocols),
- discuss the characteristics of data communication,
- watch a video on how computer devices are connected to create a data communication system,
- create a simulation to show interaction among data communication components (sender, message, medium, protocol, receiver),
- brainstorm the meaning of the terms (data transmission, Analog signals, digital signal data rate, baud rate, bandwidth),
- illustrate data communication modes (simplex, half-duplex, full-duplex),
- debate the advantages and disadvantages of data communication modes,
- sensitise peers on the significance of data communication systems in networking.
Suggested Key Inquiry Question(s)
- How is data communicated in computer networking?
- What are the technological advancements in the modes of data communication systems?
Core Competencies to be Developed
Self-efficacy: The learner follows the correct procedure when creating a simulation to show interaction among data communication components.
Citizenship: The learner demonstrates critical and constructive dialogue during debate sessions on the advantages and disadvantages of data communication modes.
Values
Patriotism: The learner respects fellow learners’ opinions as they discuss characteristics of data communication.
Respect: The learner appreciates the diverse opinions of others as they discuss data communication characteristics.
Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs)
Social Awareness Skills: The learner enhances negotiation skills during debate sessions on the advantages and disadvantages of data communication modes.
