Marking Scheme
1. (a) Dedication of Jesus
- On the 8th day, Jesus was circumcised and named according to the angel’s message.
- When the day of Mary’s purification according to Mosaic laws arrived, they brought Jesus to be dedicated at the temple.
- They offered a pair of turtle doves and two young pigeons according to the law.
- A devout man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem, full of the Holy Spirit, waiting for the Messiah.
- He was led by the Holy Spirit to the temple when Jesus’ parents brought Him in accordance with customs.
- Simeon took Jesus in his arms, blessed Him, and declared he was ready to die since he had seen the Christ and God’s salvation.
- He proclaimed that Jesus was a light for salvation to the Gentiles and glory to the Israelites.
- Jesus’ parents were amazed by what was spoken.
- Simeon blessed them and told Mary that Jesus was destined for the rise and fall of many in Israel.
- He also revealed that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul, revealing the thoughts of many hearts.
- Anna, daughter of Phanuel, who was advanced in age and had lived with her husband for seven years in virginity, also lived in the temple, fasting day and night.
- She gave thanks to God and spoke of Jesus to all who were looking for redemption.
- After all this, they returned to Galilee, where Jesus grew strong in spirit, full of wisdom and God’s grace.

(b) Role of John the Baptist in Preparing the Way for the Messiah
- He preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, preparing the people spiritually to receive the Messiah.
- John bore witness to Jesus as the Messiah and Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
- He introduced Jesus to his disciples.
- In his preaching, John acknowledged that Jesus was greater than himself.
- He spoke about social justice and chastity, preparing the people to receive the messianic teachings.
- John warned people of God’s impending judgment, stating that being children of Abraham was insufficient; they had to repent and bear fruits.
- He baptized Jesus at the River Jordan to prepare Him for His ministry.

2. (a) Healing of the Centurion’s Servant
- Jesus went to the city of Capernaum.
- In the town, a centurion had a dear servant who was very sick.
- The centurion sent Jewish elders to request Jesus to heal his servant.
- The elders beseeched Jesus to help the centurion because he had built a synagogue for them.
- Jesus agreed to go with them to the centurion’s house.
- However, the centurion sent friends to stop Jesus, stating he was not worthy to host Him.
- The centurion believed that Jesus’ word alone was enough to heal his servant.
- Jesus was amazed by the centurion’s strong faith, being a non-Jew.
- When the messengers returned home, they found the sick servant healed.

- To avoid confrontation with Jewish teachers.
- To make His teaching interesting and easy to understand.
- Parables were a common teaching method during His time.
