            (b) Give six reasons why the Israelites broke the covenant while at Mt.Sinai  (6 marks)

(a) Reasons why Christians read the Bible.

  1.  It provides Christians with moral values.
  2.  It is a source of spiritual.
  3.  It is used in Christian worship.
  4.  It gives them inspiration/ hope.
  5.  It helps them to understand their relationship with God.
  6.  It is a source of Christian beliefs/ practices.
  7.  It reveals God to them makes them understand the will of God.
  8.  It is a source of knowledge.
  9.  It is the word of God and the authors were inspired by God.    Any 4 x2=8 marks

 (b) Attributes of God as portrayed in Genesis stories of creation.

  1.  God is all powerful/ omnipotent.
  2.  God of order/orderly/ perfect.
  3.  He is everywhere/ omnipresent.
  4.  He is the provider/ sustainer.
  5.  He is the creator.
  6.  He is all knowing/ omniscient.
  7.  He commands moral.
  8.  He is loving.
  9.  He is everlasting/self existence.

2.        

(a) How God prepared the Israelites for the making of the covenant at Mt.Sinai.

  1.  God told Moses to remind the people of Israel of how he had brought them out of Egypt.
  2.  God told Moses that he wanted to make a special relationship with Israel make them a kingdom of priests.
  3.  Moses called all the leaders and told them what god had said.
  4.  God told Moses that he wanted the Israelites to obey him.
  5.  The Israelites promised to do all that the Lord had said.
  6.  God promised to come down and meet with the people on the third day.
  7.  The people were to abstain from sexual relationships.
  8.  On the third day, there was a thick cloud upon the mountain/ loud trumpet blast/ an earthquake.
  9.  Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God/ they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.
  10.  The Lord came down to the top of the mountain/ called Moses to go to him.        Any 8 x1= 8 marks

 (b) Reasons why the Israelites broke the covenant while at Mt Sinai.

  1.  Moses their leader delayed to come down from the covenant.
  2.  Aaron who had been left incharge of the people was a weak leader.
  3.  The people demanded for a god / gods they could see/ feel.
  4.  The people were still influenced by the Egyptian way of worship/ idolatry.
  5.  Moses teaching/ influence had faded/ vanished from peoples minds.
  6.  The people had lost faith in their invisible god.        First 6 x1= 6marks                                       

 (c) Lessons learned by Christians about the nature of God from the Exodus.

  1.  God is caring.                                 
  2.  He is patient.
  3.  He communicates.                         
  4.  He is merciful.
  5.  He provides.                                
  6.  He is jealous.
  7.  He is powerful.                         
  8.  He is faithful.
  9.  he guides.
  10.  He protects.
  11.  He commands.
  12.  He is to be obeyed.
  13.  He punishes those who disobey him.

3.        

(a) The functions of the temple in the Jewish community.

  1.  It was used for worship/prayers.
  2.  It was the place where the law was taught to children / people.
  3.  Priests burnt sacrifices offered incense in the temple of God.
  4.  It was a home for priests. Residential for levites.
  5.  Purification rituals were conducted here.
  6.  Dedication/ presentation of the babies were carried out in the temple.
  7.  It was the business centre for Jews commercial centre.
  8.  The Jewish council (Sanhedrin) hold their sessions here/ a place where cases where heard/ determined /law court.
  9.  All the Jewish festivals were carried out here.        First 7 x1=7 marks

 (b) Ways which shows that King Solomon turned away from the covenant way of life.

  1.  He married foreign wives/ concubines.
  2.  He allowed worship of foreign gods/ idols/ worshipped foreign gods.
  3.  He murdered his half brother Adinojah who he thought he would rival his power.
  4.  He taxed the Israelites heavily for his upkeep.
  5.  He disobeyed the instructions given to him by his father David to rely on God.
  6.  He built places of worship for the false gods.
  7.  He signed treaties with his neighbours for protection.
  8.  He sold land to Hiram king of Tire.
  9.  He used more time to build his palace than the temple of God.    First 6 x1= 6marks

 (c) Factors that have led to the increase of Christians denominations in Kenya.

  1.  Rivalry for leadership/ hunger for power.
  2.  Differences in biblical interpretation/ hunger of power.
  3.  Resistance to change by the order church members who want to remain as it was generational gap.
  4.  material gain/ greedy selfish where stating a church has become a business.
  5.  Lack of good example/ poor role made by the leaders/ corrupt leaders.
  6.  Nepotism/ tribalism/clannish/ racialism among Christians.
  7.  The Kenyan constitution has allowed freedom of worship disagreements in ethical issues/ policies in the church regarding how certain matters should be handled eg. Family planning, dressing.    First 7 x1= 7marks


4.        

(a) reasons why Amos was against the worship of God in Israel.

  1.  The Israelites had neglected god /worshipped idols.
  2.  They practiced insincere worship/ had no inner faith.
  3.  The worshippers were not righteous/ they mistreated fellow Israelites which was against God’s teachings.
  4.  They worshipped God as well as Baal/ practiced syncretism.
  5.  They were impatient during the worship ceremony/ wanted to go back to their businesses.
  6.  They gave sacrifices/ offerings as a show off/ pride not for love of God.
  7.  They had many ceremonial festivals/ feasts.
  8.  They showed disrespect to the name of god through sexual immorality.
  9.  They defiled the place of worship eg drinking and wine.
  10.  Building high places for the gods and worshipped other gods.    First 4 x2 =8 marks

 (b) Ways in which God punished Israel fro her evil according to prophet Amos.

  1.  Israel would be surrounded by an enemy nation.
  2.  The Israelites would be taken to exile.
  3.  Amaziah, the priest/ king would die by the sword.
  4.  The holy place of worship would be destroyed.
  5.  The land would be hunger/ thirst for the word of God.
  6.  God would cover the land with total darkness/ eclipse.

 There would be earthquakes.        First 6 x1 = 6 marks

 (c) How the church punishes errant members.

  1.  The church suspends them.
  2.  It denies them participation in the church activities/ rituals.
  3.  They may be denied leadership positions/ demoted/ withdrawal of privileges.
  4.  They may be publicly condemned/ asked to repent / apologies.
  5.  They may be warned.
  6.  Some may be transferred to difficult areas.
  7.  They may be sacked from the job.
  8.  They may be excommunicated.
  9.  Payment of fines.    Any 6 x1=6 marks


5.        

(a) The promises that Israelites made when they renewed their covenant with

  1. God during the times of Nehemiah.( Nehemiah 10:28 -29)
  2.  They were to live according to God’s law/ obey all his commandments/ requirements.
  3.  They would not intermarry with foreigners living in their land.
  4.  They promised not to farm every seventh year/ they were to cancel all the debts.
  5.  They would make annual contributions towards temple expenses/ not to neglect the house of God.
  6.  They were to provide wood for burning sacrifices.
  7.  They were to offer the first fruits of their harvest/ dedicate their first born sons/ flocks as required by the law.
  8.  They would pay their tithes in accordance with the law.
  9.  They will not do any business on the Sabbath day.        First 4 x2=8 marks

 (b) The final reforms carried out by Nehemiah to restore the worship of God in Judah.

  1.  Cleansing of the temple.
  2.  Reinstating of the levites and other temple workers.
  3.  He ordered the closure of Jerusalem for proper Sabbath observances.
  4.  He separated the Jewish from the foreigners.
  5.  He purified the priesthood.
  6.  Throwing out the household of Tobia out of the chamber.
  7.  Cleansing the chamber in the temple.
  8.  returning the vessels of the house of God.
  9.  Appointing treasurers over the storehouse.
  10.  Stopping the buying and selling of wares on the Sabbath day.
  11.  He ordered an end to mixed marriages/ foreigners.    First 6 x1= 6 marks

(c) The problem that Christian leaders face in their work today.

  1.  Opposition from political leaders/ society.
  2.  Lack of cooperation from the members of the church/ lack of unity among Christians.
  3.  False prophets/ cultic affiliation/ hypocrisy/ black magic/ witchcraft.
  4.  Misinterpretation of the scripture.
  5.  Drug abuse among the members.
  6.  Lack of adequate time for pastoral care.
  7.  Poor infrastructure that make it possible to reach some area.
  8.  Insecurity in some parts of the country.
  9.  Lack of resources to enable them spread the good news/ poverty
  10.  Lack of professional training to enable them do their work effectively.        Any 4 x2 = 8 marks


6.        

(a) The importance of rituals performed  during naming in the traditional African communities.

  1.  Bathing of the babysets in the beginning of new life.
  2.  Shaving of the mother and baby’s hair symbolizes new status.
  3.  Choosing of the appropriate name to give the baby is for identification/ incorporation into the wider society/ honour to the ancestor.
  4.  feeding of the baby symbolizes new life growth.
  5.  Holding of the baby by members of the community shows concern for it/ shared responsibility by the extended family.
  6.  Saying prayer/ words of blessings for the mother and baby signified long life.
  7.  Slaughtering of animal is a way of thanks giving to ancestors/ God.
  8.  Feasting is a sign of Joy/ socialism/ welcoming the baby/ acceptance.
  9.  Giving of presents to the baby mother is assign of good will/ ownership of property.
  10.  wearing of charms signified protection for the baby/ mother.        Any 5 x2=10 marks

 (b) Moral values acquired during marriage in traditional African communities.

  1.  Faithfulness/ loyalty/ obedience.
  2.  Respect/ courtesy.
  3.  Responsibility/ hard work.
  4.  Hospitality/ kindness.
  5.  Tolerance. Perseverance/ endurance/ patience.
  6.  Love
  7.  Co-operation/ unity
  8.  Humility
  9.  Honesty
  10.  Integrity.
  11.  Courage        Any 5 x1=5 marks

 (c) Reasons why death is feared in traditional African communities.

  1.  It disrupts the rhythm of human life/ activity.
  2.  It is irrevocable/ in escapable.
  3.  It brings impurity to the family.
  4.  It deprives the community of the individuals.
  5.  It involves too many rituals.
  6.  It comes unannounced.
  7.  It separates one from the loved ones/ marks of the end of life on earth.
  8.  Nobody knows about the life after death.
  9.  It may cause misunderstanding to the community.
  10.  Death rites reveal peoples characteristics.
  11.  It brings poverty to the family involved.        Any 5 x1= 5 marks
