How Did Jesus Fulfill the Old Testament Prophecies Concerning the Messiah?

​Several references in the New Testament show how Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah’s coming. ​These are;

• Luke 1:26 – 27:
  Old Testament prophesies that Jesus Christ would be born in David’s lineage are confirmed when the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a young woman i.e. Mary, Joseph’s fiancee.  Joseph came from David’s lineage.
• Luke 1:32:
  Nathan’s prophecy that God would make David’s descendant rule over Israel forever is affirmed by the angel Gabriel during the Annunciation. The angel said, ‘………the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David and will reign over the house of Jacob forever.’
• Isaiah’s prophecy of the virgin conception in Isaiah 7:14 is fulfilled in the angel Gabriel’s message to Mary that she was going to conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, Luke 1:35.
• Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would be named Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14 is fulfilled in Angel Gabriel’s message to Joseph that Mary’s son would be called Immanuel.
• Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the small town of Judah which was also the birthplace of    King David (Luke 2:5).  This was in fulfillment of Micah’s prophecy Micah 5:1 about a ruler of Israel whom God would raise up from the town of Bethlehem.
• Jesus was hailed as the Messiah descended from David by the blind beggar of Jericho who shouted ‘Jesus son of David! Take pity on me.’  Luke 18:38.  This was a fulfillment of Nathan’s prophecy that was echoed by Jeremiah that the Messiah would come from David’s family (2nd James 7:12 – 13, Jeremiah 23:5-6).
• Isaiah’s prophecy of the Messiah who would bring salvation to the whole world (Isaiah 42:6, 46:13, 52:10) is echoed in Simon’s prophecy in the temple about baby Jesus (Luke 2:29 – 32)
• When Jesus taught in the synagogue in Nazareth at the beginning of his ministry, he quoted Isaiah 61:12 to affirm that he was the messiah that Isaiah had talked about Luke 4:18 – 19.
• Isaiah’s prophecy about the messiah who would work miracles Isaiah 29:19, 35:56, 61:1    was fulfilled when Jesus turned water into wine at Can in Galilee, raised the dead, cast out evil spirits, and carried out several healing miracles. Through these miracles, Jesus was showing that the Messianic age had come.
• Isaiah’s prophecy of a suffering servant in chapter 53 is fulfilled through the passion and death of Jesus.

• Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophesy of a peaceful king during the triumphant entry when he entered Jerusalem riding on a  donkey
• Jesus taught through parables as foretold by Isaiah  6 :9-10
• Jesus’ suffering, death, and ascension fulfill the psalmist’s prophecy.
• Jesus fulfilled the new covenant foretold by Jeremiah during the Last Supper, His death and resurrection.

• Isaiah 11:1-2: “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots, a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him.”

2. Restoration of Israel

• Jeremiah 23:7-8: “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘The Lord lives who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’ but they will say, ‘The Lord lives who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’”
