  1. “Moyo wake ni jiwe.” → Anamaanisha kuwa hana huruma.
  2. “Maisha ni safari.” → Maisha yana mwendo, changamoto, na malengo.
  3. “Macho yake ni nyota.” → Ana macho yenye kung’aa na fahari.

Kwa nini tunatumia Istiari?

  • Kuonesha wazo kwa njia ya kuvutia
  • Kufanya maelezo yawe machache lakini yenye nguvu
  • Kuongeza ufasaha katika lugha

Istiari (Metaphor): Definition and Examples

What is a Metaphor?

metaphor (“Istiari” in Swahili) is a figure of speech that directly compares two unrelated things by stating that one thing is another, highlighting a shared quality. Unlike a simile (which uses “like” or “as”), a metaphor creates a stronger, more imaginative connection.

Examples of Metaphors

  1. “Her heart is stone.” → She is emotionally cold.
  2. “Life is a journey.” → Life has ups, downs, and destinations.
  3. “His eyes are stars.” → His eyes shine brightly with hope.

Why Use Metaphors?

  • Makes descriptions more vivid
  • Simplifies complex ideas
  • Adds creativity to language

Je, unatumia istiari siku zote? (Do you use metaphors daily?)

Metaphors are everywhere—in proverbs, songs, and everyday speech! Can you think of a metaphor in Swahili or English? Share in the comments! 😊
