History, Achievements, and Role in Kenya’s Independence Struggle

📜 Historical Background

Following the enactment of the Trade Unions Ordinance in 1952, various small African trade unions united to form the Kenya Federation of Registered Trade Unions (KFRTU).

  • 🍞 Protest against increase in the price of tea and bread (1955)
  • 🆘 Protest against the continuity of the state of emergency

🔄 Evolution to Kenya Federation of Labour (KFL)

1953:

Tom Mboya’s Kenya Local Government Workers’ Union (KLGWU) joined KFRTU

Changed name to Kenya Federation of Labour (KFL) representing 35,000 members

International Affiliation:

Due to Tom Mboya’s efforts, KFL affiliated to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU)
