Forms of corruption common in Kenya today

Corruption in Kenya is a multifaceted issue that has deeply entrenched itself in various sectors of society. It manifests in numerous forms, each contributing to the erosion of public trust and hindering the nation’s development. Here are some of the prevalent forms of corruption in Kenya today:

1. Tribalism

Tribalism involves favouritism towards one’s ethnic group, often leading to unfair distribution of resources and opportunities. This form of corruption undermines national unity and fosters inequality.

2. Bribery

Bribery is the act of giving or receiving something of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty. It is rampant in many sectors, including law enforcement, healthcare, and business, leading to compromised services and justice.

3. Cheating in Business

Cheating in business includes practices such as fraud, misrepresentation, and unfair competition. These unethical practices distort the market, harm consumers, and discourage honest entrepreneurship.

4. Robbery

Robbery, often involving violence or threats, is a severe form of corruption that directly impacts the safety and security of individuals and businesses. It contributes to a climate of fear and instability.

5. Stealing

Stealing, whether petty theft or grand larceny, is a pervasive issue that affects both public and private sectors. It includes embezzlement of funds, theft of public property, and other forms of misappropriation.

6. Misuse of Public Funds/Resources/Property

This form of corruption involves the improper use of government resources for personal gain. It includes activities such as diverting public funds, using government vehicles for private purposes, and other forms of resource mismanagement.

7. Grabbing of Land

Land grabbing involves the illegal acquisition of land, often through fraudulent means or abuse of power. This practice displaces communities, disrupts livelihoods, and leads to conflicts.
