The Nandi Resistance (1895-1906) ⚔️

🔥 Reasons for Nandi Resistance

  • Pride & Superiority: Having subdued neighbors (Luo, Maasai, Abagusii, Abaluhyia), the Nandi felt confident against British intruders.
  • Military Strength: Well-trained warriors with experience from cattle raids made them feel equal to the whites.
  • Cultural Distaste: They considered white people’s appearance evil and wanted them expelled.
  • Land Alienation: Opposed British grabbing of land for railway/white settlement.
  • Kimnyole’s Prophecy: Foretold foreign domination, motivating resistance.
  • History of Resistance: Had successfully warded off Arab/Swahili traders in 1850s.
  • Protecting Independence: Determined to safeguard long-enjoyed freedom.
  • Strong Leadership: Koitalel Arap Samoei’s unity (1895-1905) brought victories.

🛡️ Course of the Nandi Rebellion

📜 1895: Resistance began with guerrilla tactics against caravan traders/mail carriers.

1895: British officer Andrew Dick murdered two Nandi warriors, sparking retaliation (Peter West + 30 workers killed).

🚂 Railway Construction: Nandi stole materials, ambushed builders, and refused cooperation.

💥 1900: Three British punitive expeditions under Colonel Evatt (with Maasai, Baganda, Swahili mercenaries).

🤝 1901: Temporary truce by Walter Mayes due to heavy casualties on both sides.

🔥 Resumed Conflict: Nandi destroyed railway when British settled on their land (1902-1905).

🎯 October 1905: Koitalel Arap Samoei assassinated by Captain Meinertzhagen during fake “peace” meeting.

🕊️ December 1905: Nandi sought peace after 10-year resistance.

  • 🤝 Kipsigis, Elgeyo, Lembus, Nyangori support

💔 Why Nandi Were Ultimately Defeated

  • 🤝 British had Maasai/Somali collaborators
  • 🔫 Superior British weaponry
  • 🤒 Smallpox outbreak (1890) weakened Nandi
  • 🚫 No support from hostile neighbors (Luo, Abaluhyia)
  • 🎭 Meinertzhagen’s treachery killing Koitalel
  • 😔 Koitalel’s death demoralized resistance
  • 🔥 British “Scorched Earth Policy” destroyed villages/livestock

📜 Results of Nandi Resistance

  • 🏴 Nandi land colonized (lost independence by 1906)
  • ⚰️ Massive casualties (Koitalel + 1000 warriors, British losses)
  • 🔥 Property destruction (5000+ cattle confiscated, 5000+ huts burned)
  • 🏞️ Land alienation (pushed to reserves, lost salt licks)
  • 🛡️ Military organization destroyed
  • 👥 Separated from Kipsigis allies
  • 👮 Many warriors recruited into colonial police

The Nandi Resistance remains one of Kenya’s most prolonged and organized anti-colonial struggles
