LESSON PLAN 41: Practical Topology Simulation and Selection
Lesson Details
Strand: 2.0 Computer Networking
Sub Strand: 2.4 Network Topologies
Duration: 40 minutes (Single lesson)
Lesson: 3 of 4
Class Level: Grade 10
Key Inquiry Question (Lesson Starter)
How do we select and implement the most appropriate network topology for specific situations?
Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
a) simulate physical network topologies using available devices,
b) select the appropriate physical network topology for a given situation,
c) demonstrate practical understanding of topology implementation,
d) analyze real-world scenarios to determine optimal topology choices.
Selected Learning Experiences
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Review homework: Check topology illustration portfolios and advantage/disadvantage charts
- Pose the key inquiry question
- Present challenge: “Your school wants to upgrade the computer lab network. Which topology should they use?”
- Brief brainstorming on factors to consider
- Show two contrasting examples:
- Poor choice: Bus topology for modern 40-computer lab (slow, unreliable)
- Good choice: Star topology with quality switch (fast, manageable)
- Explain: Today we’ll practice selecting and creating topologies
- Introduce hands-on focus: Building actual network models
Development Activities (30 minutes)
Activity 1: Practical Topology Simulation (18 minutes)
- Simulate a physical network topology using available devices
- During a social gathering, simulate a physical network topology using available devices
Simulation Methods:
