  1. Jeroboam’s refusal to reduce the harsh rule of his father.
  2. A curse from God on Solomon’s house for breaking the covenant way of life.
  3. Solomon did not obey the advice of his father (to obey God), resulting in power being taken from his house.
  4. Solomon married many wives who brought idol worship.
  5. Availability of an alternative leader – Jeroboam.
  6. Solomon introduced forced labor and high taxation, leading to public discontent.

b) Explain corruption as shown by King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. (7 marks)

  1. Ahab admired a vineyard belonging to Naboth.
  2. Ahab asked Naboth to give him the land in exchange for money or another farm.
  3. Ahab was disappointed when Naboth refused the offer.
  4. Jezebel wrote a letter and forged Ahab’s signature.
  5. The letter accused Naboth of treason and blasphemy.
  6. The penalty for these accusations was death.
  7. Naboth was stoned to death, and Ahab took over the vineyard.

c) Explain briefly forms of corruption in Kenyan society today. (5 marks)

  1. Tribalism – favoring individuals from one’s own tribe in employment, sports, schools, etc.
  2. Bribery – payment of money to gain favors for undeserved benefits.
  3. Stealing – taking money or property belonging to others.
  4. Dishonesty – claiming benefits one does not deserve.
  5. Misuse of public funds – using property for personal gain.
  6. Land grabbing through deceit.

a) Give four significances of the prophetic actions of Jeremiah with reference to the theme of suffering and hope. (8 marks)

  1. The vision of an almond tree/boiling pot symbolized impending invasion from the North (Babylon).
  2. Buying linen cloth that became spoiled symbolized God’s intention to spoil the pride of the people.
  3. Breaking a flask publicly symbolized the destruction of Jerusalem.
  4. Renouncing marriage and living a solitary life symbolized the suffering of Judah.
  5. Making yoke bars and putting them on his neck symbolized Yahweh’s will for Judah to submit to a foreign nation.
  6. Refusing to feast or mourn showed that all things would end with the conquest of Judah by Babylon.
  7. His imprisonment before the fall of Jerusalem showed hope for Israel’s survival.
  8. Cursing the day of his birth demonstrated his struggle, but God reassured him of his strength.
  9. Buying land in Jerusalem symbolized future restoration.
  10. Writing a letter to exiles gave hope of restoration.
