  • This paper consists of six questions, each worth twenty marks.
  • Answer any five questions in the space provided after Question 6(c).
  • This paper consists of two printed pages.
  • Candidates should check the question paper to ensure that all pages are printed as indicated and that no questions are missing.
  • Candidates should answer the questions in English.

Questions

1.

(a) Outline the prophecies of the prophet Isaiah concerning the suffering servant of Yahweh (Isaiah 53). (8 marks)

  1. The servant will succeed in his work and will be highly honoured.
  2. This success and honour will surprise many who observe him.
  3. He has nothing attractive; he is very ordinary and simple.
  4. He is harshly treated, arrested, sentenced to death, and killed.
  5. His body is buried with the bodies of rich men.
  6. He endures all that is done to him in humble silence.
  7. He accepts the suffering which should have been received by others for their sins.
  8. Through his suffering, human beings are reconciled to God.
  9. His death is a sacrifice that brings forgiveness of sins.

(b) Explain the events that took place the night Jesus was born. (6 marks)

  1. Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem for a census ordered by Caesar Augustus.
  2. All rooms in the inn were full.
  3. Jesus was born and laid in a manger.
  4. There were shepherds in the field looking after their flock.
  5. An angel appeared to the shepherds, informing them about the birth of a saviour.
  6. Angels in heaven sang and glorified God.
  7. The shepherds visited the baby and found him as they had been told by the angel.
  8. The shepherds testified to the parents about the angel’s message concerning the baby.
  9. The shepherds returned, glorifying God.

(c) Give six lessons that Christians learned from the incident when Jesus went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover at the age of 12. (6 marks)

  1. They should introduce their children to church activities at an early age.
  2. Christian parents should observe what their children are doing.
  3. They should teach their children about God.
  4. They should provide opportunities for their children to interact with others.
  5. Parents should work as a team in raising their children.
  6. There should be open communication between parents and their children.

2.

(a) Describe the raising of Jairus’s daughter (Luke 8:49-56). (8 marks)

  1. While on the way to Jairus’s house with a large crowd following him, a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years touched him secretly.
  2. Upon touching Jesus, she was healed.
  3. Jesus felt some power leave him and demanded to know who had touched him.
  4. The woman identified herself.
  5. Messengers arrived from Jairus’s house with the news that his daughter had died.
  6. Upon arrival, Jesus assured the people that the girl was only sleeping.
  7. He entered the house with Peter, John, James, and the girl’s parents.
  8. Jesus took the girl by the hand and said, “Get up, my child.”
  9. Her spirit was restored.
  10. She was given food to eat.
  11. Jesus instructed them not to reveal what had happened.

(b) Give reasons why Jesus performed healing miracles. (6 marks)

  1. To demonstrate his love and compassion for humanity.
  2. To glorify God.
  3. As a sign that the Messianic age had come.
  4. To fulfill Old Testament prophecies.
  5. To reveal his divine nature.
  6. To show power over sickness and evil.
  7. As signs of forgiveness of sins.
  8. In response to people’s faith.
  9. To portray Jesus as a universal saviour.
  10. To enhance his teachings about the kingdom of God.

(c) Identify ways in which the church in Kenya continues with the healing ministry of Jesus. (6 marks)

  1. Establishing hospitals and clinics.
  2. Training medical staff.
  3. Organizing seminars to promote better health.
  4. Sponsoring medical research.
  5. Strengthening community health programs.
  6. Posting chaplains in schools and hospitals to cater for spiritual welfare.
  7. Providing financial and material support for the sick.

  9. Organizing pastoral visits to the sick and prisoners.

(a) Describe how Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples (Luke 22:14-23). (7 marks)

  1. Jesus sat with his disciples at one table.
  2. He expressed his desire to share the meal with them.
  3. He took the cup, gave thanks, and asked the disciples to share it.
  4. He took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and distributed it to them.
  5. He explained the significance of the bread and wine.
  6. He commanded them to hold the ritual in memory of him.
  7. He informed them of his impending betrayal.
  8. He taught them lessons of humility and service to others.
  9. He warned Simon Peter of his upcoming denial.

(b) Give four reasons why the disciples found it difficult to believe that Jesus had resurrected. (8 marks)

  1. The message was brought by women, regarded as lowly in society.
  2. They witnessed Jesus’ helplessness during the crucifixion.
  3. They had seen the burial and could not fathom the resurrection.
  4. They felt ashamed for denying him, wishing it was untrue.
  5. They had not understood Jesus’ teachings about his resurrection.
  6. It was a new experience; they had never seen anyone return from the dead.
  7. They lacked faith in Jesus’ teachings.
  8. They expected a political messiah who would die with dignity.

(c) State the importance of the Lord’s Supper to Christians today. (5 marks)

  1. It signifies the new covenant in Jesus’ blood, renewing faith in God.
  2. It symbolizes salvation, akin to the blood of the sacrificial lamb.
  3. It anticipates the second coming of Jesus and the establishment of God’s kingdom.
  4. It serves as an act of repentance, assuring forgiveness of sins.
  5. It symbolizes the heavenly feast Christians will partake in God’s kingdom.

(a) Identify the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:6-26). (8 marks)

  1. Joy

(b) Explain the teachings of Jesus about the unity of believers from the vine and the branches (John 15:1-10). (6 marks)

  5. Christians can bear fruit only if they remain united to Christ.

(c) Give causes of disunity in the church in Kenya today. (6 marks)

  6. Marriage is permanent.
  7. It is complete with or without children.
  8. It is a remedy against sin and should be monogamous.

(c) What are the effects of divorce on children? (5 marks)

  1. Children lack complete parental love.
  2. They may lack basic needs.
  3. They suffer psychologically.
  4. They grow up with negative attitudes towards marriage.
  5. It can lead to child delinquency and lack of identity.

6.

(a) Identify seven traditional African practices that promote law, order, and justice in society. (7 marks)

  2. Administering oaths.
  3. Observing taboos and customs.
  4. Making covenants.
  5. Reconciling warring parties.
  6. Communal sharing of meals.
  7. Installation of community leaders.

(b) What factors have led to an increase in crime in Kenya today? (6 marks)

(c) State six steps taken by the church in Kenya to reduce crime in society. (7 marks)
