1. Jewish Expectations of the Messiah
- Jews expected a political leader who would overthrow their colonial rulers.
- He would rule the world from Jerusalem and receive homage from all nations.
- Jerusalem would be the new political center of the world.
- The arrival of the Messiah would be preceded by cosmic signs.
- The Messiah would be a descendant of David.
- The Messiah would come after the return of Elijah.
- He would not associate with the poor, sinners, and Gentiles.
- He would uphold Judaism.
- He would have Godโs spirit to perform miracles.
- The messianic kingdom would be accomplished through God’s judgment on Israelโs enemies.

2. Jesus’ Response to John the Baptist’s Disciples
- Jesus cured many people of their diseases and sicknesses.
- By performing miracles of healing, Jesus fulfilled Isaiahโs prophecy of a Messiah who would work miracles in Godโs name.

- The disciples were to see how the Old Testament prophecies were being fulfilled in Jesus through His person and work.

- As Jesus was teaching, many people came to listen.
- There was a large crowd in the room where Jesus was.
- Some people brought a paralyzed man but could not reach Jesus.
- They climbed onto the roof, removed tiles, and lowered the paralyzed man.
- Seeing their faith, Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven.
- The Pharisees and teachers of the law questioned Jesus’ power to forgive sins.
- They accused Him of blasphemy, believing only God could forgive sins.
- Knowing their thoughts, Jesus asked which was easier: “Your sins are forgiven” or “Get up and walk.”
- He told the man to pick up his bed and go home.
- The man was healed and picked up his bed.

- The second servant made a profit of five more and was put in charge of five cities.
- The last servant hid the pound and made no profit.
- The rich man was annoyed, took away the pound, and gave it to the servant with ten.
- He explained that to those who have, more will be given, but from those who have nothing, even the little they have will be taken.
