LUKE 12:1-3
Luke 12:1-3 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
12 In the meanwhile, when so many thousands of the people had gathered that they were trampling on one another, Jesus commenced by saying primarily to His disciples, Be on your guard against the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy [producing unrest and violent agitation].
2 Nothing is [so closely] covered up that it will not be revealed, or hidden that it will not be known.
3 Whatever you have spoken in the darkness shall be heard and listened to in the light, and what you have whispered in [people’s] ears and behind closed doors will be proclaimed upon the housetops.
Describe Jesus’ teaching on the hypocrisy of the Pharisees
- They neglected the needs of the poor but stressed external observance of the law
- They gave temple offerings but neglected justice and love from God
- They demanded to be treated with honor, for example, the best seats to be reserved for them
- They demanded public recognition yet their hearts were evil
- They overburden the people with strict observance of the laws and traditions
- They persecuted and killed God’s prophets and messengers
- They misinterpreted the Mosaic Law and therefore denied the true knowledge of the will of God
