Duties of Samuel as a Prophet of God

  1. Intercessor for the People
    • Prayed for Israel: Samuel consistently prayed for the people of Israel, interceding on their behalf.
      • 1 Samuel 7:5: “Then Samuel said, ‘Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.’”
    • Offered sacrifices: He offered sacrifices to God to seek His favour and forgiveness for the people.
      • 1 Samuel 7:9: “And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him.”
  2. Judge of Israel
    • Administered justice: Samuel served as a judge, administering justice and guiding the people according to God’s laws.
      • 1 Samuel 7:15-16: “Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. He went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places.”
    • Led in repentance: He led the Israelites in repentance and turning back to God.
      • 1 Samuel 7:3: “Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, ‘If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.’”

    • Delivered God’s messages: Samuel faithfully delivered God’s messages to the people, often conveying difficult truths.
      • 1 Samuel 3:19-21: “So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of the Lord.”
    • Anointed kings: He anointed Saul and David as kings of Israel, following God’s instructions.
