LESSON PLAN 36: Network Protocols and Standards
Lesson Details
Strand: 2.0 Computer Networking
Sub Strand: 2.3 Computer Network Elements
Duration: 40 minutes (Single lesson)
Lesson: 3 of 5
Class Level: Grade 10
Key Inquiry Question (Lesson Starter)
How do different devices from different manufacturers communicate with each other on a network?
Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
a) explain the concept of network protocols and standards,
b) describe key protocols that establish communication over a network,
c) understand the importance of standardization in networking.
Selected Learning Experiences
Introduction (6 minutes)
- Review homework: Check network component charts and device comparisons
- Pose the key inquiry question
- Present analogy: “Imagine if everyone spoke different languages with no translator”
- Communication would be impossible
- Networks face the same challenge
- Devices need common “language” = Protocols
- Show scenario:
- Windows computer talking to Apple computer โ (works because they use same protocols)
- Two people speaking different languages โ (doesn’t work without translation)
- Ask: “How do devices ‘agree’ on how to communicate?”
- Introduce: Protocols are the rules that make network communication possible
