- They offered sacrifices on behalf of the communities
- Acted as mediators between God and the people
- Offered prayers during religious ceremonies such as birth/initiation/marriage/death/war
- Performed rituals of cleansing/healing
- Reconciled warring parties/peacemakers
- We’re part of a decision-making body, especially during calamities such as war/epidemics/drought
- Foretold the future/warned people of impending danger/calamities.
