Marking Scheme for Christian Studies

1. Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus Christ (Luke 1:26-38) (7 marks)

  • The Angel Gabriel was sent to a young virgin named Mary from Nazareth.
  • Mary was betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of King David.
  • The angel announced that Mary would become the mother of the Messiah.
  • Mary would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Humbly, Mary consented to God’s will.
  • The angel named the child Jesus, meaning “God saves.”
  • The angel described the child as:
    • The Son of the Most High.
    • The one given the throne of David.
    • Holy and the promised Messiah who would save people from their sins.
    • An everlasting king, filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • The angel informed Mary that her cousin Elizabeth had also conceived.
  • Joseph was initially unwilling to take Mary as his wife upon hearing of her pregnancy.
  • An angel revealed to him that she had conceived through the Holy Spirit.
