(b) Give eight reasons why Jesus identified himself with sinners during his public ministry. (7 marks)

(c) Identify six causes of human suffering in society today. (6 marks)

(a) Outline Jesus’ teaching on the conditions of disciples. (8 marks)

(b) Narrate the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21). (6 marks)

(c) State six ways by which Christians may use their resources for the expansion of God’s kingdom. (6 marks)

MARKING SCHEME

1. Jesus’ Dedication in the Temple (Luke 2:21-40)

a. Key Events:

  1. Mary and Joseph performed the purification ritual as required by law.
  2. Jesus was circumcised and named eight days after birth; they dedicated Him 33 days later.
  3. They had an obligation to dedicate their firstborn son to God.
  4. Mary offered a pair of turtledoves as a sacrifice.
  5. Simeon, a God-fearing man, awaited the Messiah in the temple.
  6. The Holy Spirit assured Simeon he would see the Messiah before dying.
  7. Jesus was presented to Simeon by His parents.
  8. Simeon received Jesus, gave thanks, and praised God in a hymn (Nunc Dimittis).
  9. Jesus’ parents were amazed at what they heard.
  10. Simeon blessed them and foretold Jesus’ significance for Israel.
  11. Prophetess Anna was also present, thanking God and speaking about Jesus.

b. John the Baptist’s Role:

  1. Preached baptism of repentance.
  2. Called for repentance and forgiveness.
  3. Warned of God’s coming judgment.
  4. Announced the Messiah as a judge.
  5. Advocated for social justice and sharing.
  6. Condemned false accusations and promoted fair treatment.

2. Jesus’ Healing of the Possessed Man (Luke 4:31-37)

  4. The man screamed, questioning Jesus’ intent.
  5. The demon acknowledged Jesus as God’s messenger.
  6. Jesus commanded the spirit to be silent and leave.
  7. The spirit threw the man down but caused no harm.
  8. People were astonished and questioned Jesus’ authority.
  9. News of Jesus’ miracles spread throughout the region.

b. Reasons for Jesus’ Association with Sinners:

  1. His mission was to redeem humanity from sin.
  2. He showed mercy to the sinful.
  3. His law of love is universal and non-discriminatory.
  4. He confronted the devil’s influence on sin.
  5. Sinners find solace in His kingdom of repentance and forgiveness.
  6. Jesus called the burdened to celebrate the kingdom.
  7. His mission required addressing human sinfulness.
  8. He aimed for glory through sacrifice on the cross.

c. Causes of Human Suffering Today:

  1. Diseases.
  2. Influence of evil spirits and witchcraft.
  3. Natural disasters.
  4. Taboos and failure to meet customs.
  5. Societal immorality.
  6. Curses.
  7. Peer influence.
  8. Drug and alcohol abuse.
  9. Devil worship.
  10. Negative effects of modern science and technology.

3. Jesus’ Teachings on Discipleship

a. Conditions for Disciples:

  1. Perseverance amid opposition.
  2. Self-criticism before judging others; avoid hypocrisy.
  3. Generosity and sharing with the needy.

b. The Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21):
