LESSON PLAN 20: Exploring Operating Systems in Real Environments
Lesson Details
Strand: 1.0 Foundation of Computer Studies
Sub Strand: 1.6 Operating System (OS)
Duration: 40 minutes (Single lesson)
Lesson: 3 of 5
Class Level: Grade 10
Key Inquiry Question (Lesson Starter)
How does an operating system communicate with computer hardware?
Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
a) identify operating systems in different computing environments,
b) explain how OS handles errors, interrupts, and device management,
c) demonstrate understanding of OS communication with hardware,
d) recognize the importance of operating systems in computing.
Selected Learning Experiences
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Review homework: Check OS classification tables
- Pose the key inquiry question
- Ask: “What happens when you plug in a USB drive? How does the computer recognize it?”
- Brief discussion on OS role in hardware communication
- Introduce the lesson focus: OS in action
Development Activities (30 minutes)
Activity 1: Visiting Computing Environments (10 minutes)
- Visit a computer user environment to observe and identify available operating systems
Option A: Physical Lab Visit (if possible):
- Take learners to computer lab/library/office
- Learners observe and record:
- Type of computers/devices present
- Operating systems running (Windows operating system, Macintosh Operating System (MacOS), Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome OS)
- User interface types
- Number of users
- Tasks being performed
- Complete observation worksheet
