Specific Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:

a) describe the types of transmission media in computer networks,

b) classify transmission media into guided and unguided categories,

c) compare characteristics of different transmission media,

d) appreciate the role of transmission media in computer networking.


Selected Learning Experiences

Introduction (6 minutes)

  • Review homework: Check illustrated glossaries and process flow diagrams
  • Pose the key inquiry question
  • Show different types of cables and ask: “Why do we have so many different types of cables and wireless technologies?”
  • Brief discussion on media they’ve encountered (Ethernet cables, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, fiber optic)
  • Explain that different media suit different purposes
  • Introduce the two main categories: guided and unguided media

Development Activities (29 minutes)

Activity 1: Types of Transmission Media Overview (12 minutes)

  • Watch a video on types of transmission media (5-7 minutes)
  • Discuss the types of transmission media used in computer networks
