LESSON PLAN 32: Practical Connection and Transmission Impairment
Lesson Details
Strand: 2.0 Computer Networking
Sub Strand: 2.2 Data Transmission Media
Duration: 40 minutes (Single lesson)
Lesson: 3 of 4
Class Level: Grade 10
Key Inquiry Question (Lesson Starter)
What challenges affect data transmission quality, and how can we overcome them?
Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
a) connect computer devices using appropriate transmission media,
b) examine transmission impairment in computer networks,
c) identify ways of overcoming transmission impairments,
d) demonstrate how data is transferred in a computer network using transmission media.
Selected Learning Experiences
Introduction (6 minutes)
- Review homework: Check media comparison charts
- Pose the key inquiry question
- Show two scenarios:
- Video call with perfect quality
- Video call that’s pixelated, laggy, freezing
- Ask: “What causes the difference? Why isn’t transmission always perfect?”
- Brief discussion on experiences with poor connection quality
- Introduce concepts: practical connection and transmission problems
Development Activities (29 minutes)
Activity 1: Practical Device Connection (10 minutes)
- Consult a resource person to demonstrate how to connect devices in a computer network using transmission media, while observing safety rules
- Demonstrate how data is transferred in a computer network using transmission media
