STRAND 2.0: COMPUTER NETWORKING

Sub Strand: 2.3 Computer Network Elements

Specific Learning Outcomes

By the end of the sub strand, the learner should be able to:

a) identify the types of computer networks in a computer user environment,

b) describe the elements of a computer network,

c) examine the factors to consider when choosing a computer network,

d) connect digital devices to a computer network,

e) appreciate the role of computer networks in communication.

Suggested Learning Experiences

The learner is guided to:

  • brainstorm the meaning and benefits of a computer network,
  • discuss various factors considered when classifying computer networks (geographical span, inter-connectivity, administration, and architecture),
  • use available resources to search for different types of computer networks (LAN, MAN, WAN, PAN, WLAN) and present,
  • visit a computer user environment, identify the type of network in use, and list components that make up the network (transmission media, DTE, DCE, network software),
  • discuss the functions of each network device (routers, NICs, gateways, hubs, MODEMS, bridges, repeaters) and network software (network OS, web browsers, search engines, email clients),
  • discuss the standards (protocols) that establish communication over a network (TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTPS),
  • share data through different computer network setups,
  • discuss the factors to be considered when choosing a computer network (performance, security, scalability, reliability, compatibility, and cost),
  • discuss the methods of connecting to a computer network (point-to-point connection, multi-point connection),
  • connect a digital device to a computer network (wired, wireless) and share data such as data on road use regulations,
  • observe online safety rules when sharing resources through a computer network,
  • use locally available materials to model a computer network such as a model for emergency reporting and response (transport, hospital),
  • develop print or digital content for use in sensitising community members on how to connect devices to a computer network,
  • share experiences on the use of computer networks.

Suggested Key Inquiry Question(s)

How are computer networks formed?

Core Competencies to be Developed

Citizenship: The learner observes online ethical and moral practices while sharing resources through a computer network.

Digital Literacy: The learner connects digital devices to a computer network and shares data.

Values

Social Justice: The learner shares resources equitably while using locally available materials to model a computer network.

Responsibility: The learner observes safety precautions while connecting digital devices to a computer network.

Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs)

Socio-economic and Environmental Issues: The learner enhances financial literacy skills by using locally available materials to model a computer network.
